Background of the study
Religion has historically played a critical role in shaping linguistic identity, particularly among communities where religious affiliation intersects with cultural heritage. Among Yoruba Muslims and Christians, religion not only guides spiritual beliefs but also influences language use, rituals, and community interactions. Over the past decades, studies have observed that religious practices and texts contribute to the formation of unique linguistic patterns, fostering a sense of belonging and identity among adherents (Adeola, 2023). The interplay between religious doctrine and everyday communication has led to the incorporation of specific religious terminologies and expressions into the vernacular. For Yoruba Muslims, Arabic loanwords and Qur’anic phrases are interwoven with Yoruba, while Yoruba Christians often integrate biblical references and hymn-based lexicons into their daily language. These divergent practices highlight how religious affiliation can result in varied linguistic identities within the same ethnic group. Recent sociolinguistic research suggests that such religious influences may affect language standardization and educational outcomes, as well as shape intergroup relations (Fashola, 2024). Globalization and modern media further complicate these dynamics, calling for renewed examination of traditional language policies in multicultural settings (Ogunleye, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the acknowledged influence of religion on linguistic identity, there is a significant gap in understanding how religious affiliation specifically shapes language use among Yoruba Muslims and Christians. The coexistence of distinct religious practices within the Yoruba community has led to divergent linguistic repertoires, potentially affecting social cohesion and cultural preservation (Okeke, 2023). Current educational and media frameworks often overlook these nuanced linguistic variations, resulting in policies that may not fully address the diverse needs of religious sub-groups. Moreover, the integration of religious lexicons in everyday language raises concerns about language standardization and its implications for formal communication. The lack of comprehensive studies examining these dynamics poses challenges for educators and policymakers in formulating inclusive language strategies. This study aims to bridge this gap by critically analyzing the impact of religion on linguistic identity, thereby informing more effective language and cultural policies.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To investigate the influence of religious practices on language use among Yoruba Muslims and Christians.
  2. To compare the linguistic features and terminologies adopted by both groups.
  3. To propose recommendations for integrating religious linguistic elements into inclusive language policies.

Research questions:

  1. How does religious affiliation shape the linguistic identity of Yoruba Muslims and Christians?
  2. What are the key differences in language use between these two religious groups?
  3. How can language policies accommodate religious linguistic variations while promoting social cohesion?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Religious affiliation significantly influences the linguistic identity among Yoruba communities.
  2. Yoruba Muslims and Christians exhibit distinct linguistic features as a result of their religious practices.
  3. Inclusive language policies can effectively integrate religious linguistic elements and enhance intergroup communication.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it provides a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between religion and linguistic identity among Yoruba Muslims and Christians. The findings will inform educational and cultural policymakers, enabling them to develop language strategies that respect religious diversity while promoting cohesive social communication. By highlighting the specific linguistic influences of religious practices, the research contributes to broader discussions on cultural preservation and identity formation in multicultural societies (Akinyemi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of religion on linguistic identity among Yoruba Muslims and Christians, focusing exclusively on language use within religious contexts and community interactions.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Linguistic Identity: The way individuals perceive and express their identity through language.
  2. Religious Affiliation: The identification with a specific religious belief or community.
  3. Yoruba Muslims/Christians: Members of the Yoruba community who practice Islam or Christianity respectively.
